Cellulite is often referred to as ‘orange-peel skin’ or ‘cottage cheese skin‘. It is a skin condition, which unlike what you may have read in the past, is not harmful to the human body. In fact, cellulite is not a build up of toxins, as any many resources seem to suggest.
The onset of cellulite occurs in almost 90% of women and 10% of men, particularly in their legs, buttocks and arms. Cellulite occurs when fat deposits push through the connective tissue beneath the skin.
The probability for the onset of cellulite is usually higher when the following states are present:
1) Hormonal imbalances – particularly with the reduction in estrogen levels e.g. during menopause
2) Elevated levels of insulin – this facilitates the deposit of fat molecules
3) Prolonged sitting, prolonged standing or inactive lifestyle in general
There are 4 grades of cellulite development:
Grade 0: no visible cellulite
Grade 1: smooth skin while standing, bumps and dimples appear while sitting
Grade 2: mild ‘orange peel skin’ or ‘cottage cheese skin’ appearance both while sitting and standing
Grade 3: substantial ‘orange peel skin’ or ‘cottage cheese skin’ appearance both while sitting and standing
Furthermore, the progression from grade 0 to grade 3 is usually caused by one or more of the following factors:
i) Fluid retention – water retention under the skin is a significant cause of cellulite
ii) Gain in body fat levels – cellulitis lumps on the back of thighs are a common result of enlarged fat cells
iii) Stress – this may change the way the liver functions in terms of food digestion and toxin elimination
iv) Lack of exercise – the onset of cellulite occurs when connective fiber tissues underneath the skin become weak or lose their elasticity; however, strengthening those areas (in addition to general fat loss) can help
v) Smoking – tobacco reduces blood flow and weakens the formation of collagen which is important for skin health
In Part 2 we will be discussing different ways how to combat cellulite while sharing with you a magnificent recipe which can significantly reduce cellulite appearance for up to 2 days. Stay tuned!
To fitness with love,
