I recently had the opportunity to visit a gym in Toronto called CORE. I found out about CORE from one of my good friends who has a membership and raves about it. He would describe to me these butt kicking workouts that sounded unique, challenging and right up my alley! So I decided to check it out. I have to admit I was hooked at CORE after just one session and so I returned.
The workouts are primarily circuit based, which I really love because you get a tough workout with variety so you don’t get bored. They focus on developing both strength and endurance and really get your heart rate up so you’re torching calories both before and for several hours after the class. I also liked that the class sizes are small so instructors can provide you with more individualized attention, almost like you have a personal trainer but with the added motivation of the group. This place is a must to check out if you are a fitness enthusiast or just want to get into shape.
I loved CORE so much I wanted to meet with the owner, Michele, to see if she’d be willing to talk to me about CORE so I could share it with all our Mirror Friendly followers. What follows is my interview with Michele.
1. What is the concept behind CORE?
CORE is all about our C5 Method of training. Focusing on all major muscle groups in a functional way to maximize results of lean muscle gain and fat loss.
2. What prompted you to open CORE?
I opened CORE because I hated the business model of the “big box gym” I wanted to do something that actually cared about the health and results of people and I wanted to create a place that was fun and not intimidating.
3. When did CORE first open?
CORE opened in July 2009
4. Who is CORE for?
CORE is for anybody who is looking to train hard, and find their inner athlete.
5. Walk me through what one might expect when they come to CORE? What would a workout look like?
When someone comes to CORE for the first time they can expect to walk into a friendly environment. The staff and the other clients are there to help and encourage everyone. The workouts are tough, but effective and are tailored to each person’s individual fitness level.
Every day is a different workout and each day there is a different focus. But most days we make sure to work on strength and conditioning. The trainers we with all the clients throughout every workout making sure technique is perfect and making sure each person is getting the most out of their workout.
6. Who comes up with the awesome daily CORE workouts and what do they have in mind when developing them? They are amazing!
The whole program is developed a month in advance – myself and my staff develop the program based on things we observe on the daily. Common weaknesses, strengths, what people like, what they don’t like and each and every workout falls in line with our C5 Philosophy.
7. What are your future plans for CORE?
I want to continue to grow CORE’s following inside the studio and online. We are in the process of expanding our services into corporate wellness, and have already made a mark in the online training world. My goal for CORE is to give my staff the best coaching, continuing education and the best career they could hope for and for my clients to come to the most bad-ass place to train with the best customer service – get all the advice and attention they could need to reach their goals!
We have a lot of followers who aren’t from the local area.
8. What options do they have if they want to experience a CORE workout?
CORE is international! We train people from all over the world, online. Our online training clients have access to their trainers 24/7 via social media, text, email. They receive new training and meal plans every 4 weeks based on their needs and goals.
