Vitamin C must be the most popular vitamin on the market, known as the first thing people go for whenever they catch a cold.
Since it is a water soluble vitamin, extra amounts that the body doesn’t use leaves the body through urine within 24 hours.
The following are the main benefits of Vitamin C, particularly for athletes and those who work out intensively:
1) It is a good antioxidant. Antioxidants block damage otherwise caused by ‘free radicals’ which are by-products that result when our bodies transform food into energy. For this reason it is advisable to consume Vitamin C right after your work out.
2) Vitamin C is required for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body which makes it an important supplement for recovery from intensive exercise but also from muscular, skeletal and superficial injuries.
3) For male athletes, Vitamin C will keep testosterone levels high by supporting a lower ratio of cortisol to testosterone. It also helps reduce stress.
4) Women can also benefit from taking Vitamin C because it helps balance estrogen levels during the menstrual cycle.
Foods rich in Vitamin C include all kinds of berries, oranges, broccoli, tomatoes, cauliflower and brussels sprouts.
Personal dosage and timing:
