Ever heard of chicory coffee? I personally had not until just recently when I was talking to the owner of my local health store.
Chicory is a root/plant stemming from the dandelion family.
In recent years chicory coffee has been gaining popularity in the healthy living scene, particularly as a valid alternative to people trying to cut back on caffeine. This does not mean that coffee is bad for you, however as we all know there are those people who albeit being sensitive to caffeine, still want to enjoy a cup of joe (can’t blame them!).
Chicory coffee is thus a caffeine-free drink which is very similar to coffee in both taste and colour. It is extracted from the chicory plant after which it is roasted, grounded and brewed. It is usually consumed with hot water for that coffee-like feeling.
The consumption of chicory coffee has been linked to several health benefits such as reduced inflammation, decreased blood sugar and improved digestive health.
Furthermore, chicory root is a good source of inulin; a type of fibre (prebiotic) that can improve gut health, increase bowel movement and decrease harmful gut bacteria. Some studies have also shown that chicory may help with reducing constipation.
So next time you visit your health store you might want to give this coffee a go.
To fitness with love,
Martina
